How UAE gratuity is calculated
- 21 days of basic wage for each of the first five years of service
- 30 days of basic wage for each year beyond five
- Part years count in proportion once you have completed one year of continuous service
- Less than one year of continuous service earns no gratuity
- Unpaid absence days do not count toward service
- The total is capped at two years' wage
The law bases gratuity on your last basic wage, without allowances, counts a month as 30 days and a year as 365 days, and counts both your first and last working day.

Questions
- Does unpaid leave reduce my gratuity?
- Yes. Days of unpaid absence do not count toward your service, so they shorten the service period the gratuity is calculated on. Enter them in the app and it shows the effect.
- Is gratuity based on basic or total salary?
- Basic salary only, without housing, transport or other allowances, and it uses your last basic wage.
- Who does this not cover?
- UAE nationals, who are covered by pension and social security law, and some free-zone arrangements the calculator does not model.
