Two questions, both directions
- Best TV size for the distance you sit, with minimum, optimal and maximum sizes
- Best viewing distance for the TV you have, with the closest and furthest comfortable seats
Resolution matters
Higher resolutions let you sit closer before you can see individual pixels, so the recommendation changes between 720p, 1080p, 4K and 8K. The app shows the viewing angle for the optimal result and explains how each number is calculated.
Your units, your room
Switch between centimetres and inches; screen sizes stay in inches because that is how TVs are sold. A to-scale room diagram shows the screen and the viewing cone from your seat, and the app also gives the screen's width and height for the size it recommends.
Questions
- What size TV should I get for 3 metres (10 feet)?
- With the app's 4K setting, a 3 m seat gives 80 inches at the minimum, 95 inches as the optimal size and 115 inches or more at the top. Those 4K figures aim for the wide, cinema-like view THX recommends; at 1080p the same seat gives 48 to 80 inches, with 60 as the optimal size.
- How far should I sit from a 55-inch 4K TV?
- Between 1.40 and 2.10 metres (4.6 to 6.9 feet), with about 1.75 m (5.7 feet) as the optimal seat. For a 1080p set of the same size the range moves back to 2.10 to 3.49 metres.
- Why does resolution change the answer?
- At a given distance a sharper picture lets the screen fill more of your view before pixels become visible, so higher resolutions allow a bigger screen or a closer seat.
